What’s good everyone! I hope you all have had a fantastic week. The weekend is here but Mother Nature decided to give us the cold shoulder and cool things down. Whatever the weather, I’ve found all sorts of goodies to get into this weekend. Special note, I’ll be making my “DJ” debut at my event “Bueller’s Christmas Boogie” and I want you all to come experience what I got in store! Jazz Arts Initiative is thrilled to offer a FREE jazz master workshop and concert featuring the world-famous Preservation Hall All-Stars Band from New Orleans to local student musicians this evening. The Preservation Hall All-Stars are the premiere ensemble of the most tenured artists from the greater Preservation Hall musical collective. Each performer bears a unique connection to the earliest practitioners of jazz itself, some by bloodline but all united by the sheer power of tradition. In addition to performing at the Hall weekly and internationally throughout the year, these culture bearers continue to pass the torch to the younger generation through education and music outreach. What inspires artists to create? What stimulates their imaginations? This evening, discover some unique and organic responses to those questions as The McColl Center of Art + Innovation hosts a special art discussion entitled, “Stimulus: Connections.” In conjunction with their current exhibition, New Works / Alumni One, curator Tom Stanley will introduce McColl Center alumna artist Michaela Pilar Brown‘s work in the exhibition and how she connected it to Minuette Floyd, a professor of art education and director of the Young Artist’s Workshop at the University of South Carolina School of Visual Art and Design. During this discussion, Brown and Floyd will explore their own connections and the role that camp meetings have played in their work. Kick off your jazzy holiday season as the Ziad Jazz Quartet presents Jazz at the Bechtler: Holiday Jazz XI – Jingle Bell Jazz this evening! This afternoon, join Mr. Felix Curtis for the final installment of Classic Black Cinema Series for 2018! Today’s feature is the 2001 acclaimed film “Boycott”. Starring Jeffery Wright and Terrence Howard, Boycott tells the story of a pivotal time in the history of a young republic still bleeding from civil war. The famous mid-1950s bus boycott of Montgomery – which launched the modern American civil rights movement – is presented with restraint and an obvious commitment to truth over drama. Before the film, join Gantt Center Collections & Exhibition Manager, Alexys J. Taylor as she takes participants on a special behind the scenes of the museum’s “What We Ask Is Simple” exhibition with a guided tour and talk about the work, which commemorates 20th century protest.
