Celebrate the season of love at WFAE’s inaugural CHOCOLATE tasting event that focuses on all things cocoa! This decadent two-hour chocolate tasting will feature unique, hand-crafted chocolates, desserts and other chocolate-inspired items (both sweet AND savory) from Charlotte area chocolatiers, bakeries, restaurants, wine shops, breweries and others. Attendees will also help judge the “Best of” awards at the event. Proceeds will benefit WFAE’s award-winning local news and Charlotte Talks. Come and experience some live art, music and spoken word from the Guerilla Poets as they showcase an art exhibit featuring the creativity from the energetic expressions of the youth of Time Out Youth. They have transformed their struggles, triumphs and discoveries into art for each shoe to symbolize their own unique experience. CPCC Theatre Arts is proud to present to you one of America’s most beloved tales, “Ragtime: The Musical.” Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together — that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician — united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Everyone head out to Open Studio Saturday and experience what makes McColl Center a vibrant space for contemporary art. Join Mr. Felix Curtis of Classic Black Cinema Series this afternoon at The Gantt Center for a special screening of the PBS documentary, “Slavery By Another Name.” This film eviscerates one of America’s most cherished myths: the belief that slavery ended with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Slavery by Another Name documents how thousands of African Americans were pulled back into forced labor with shocking force and brutality, sanctioned by the judicial and legislative system, and propelled by the loss of slave labor after the Civil War. Rounding out your marvelous Monday, head out to Petra’s Bar for the “Second Monday Jazz Workshop & Improv.” Join host, instrumentalist and local jazz enthusiast, John Shaughnessy as he conducts a live jazz session in front of an intimate audience. All are welcome to join in! Whether you are a flautist, guitarist, funky drummer, vocalist, horn-blower, percussionist or ivory tickler, this is the workshop for you! FREE. This evening at UNCC, come and experience the institution’s Core Ensemble as they proudly present “Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance.” This is a unique performance format in which an actor portrays multiple characters while interacting with the onstage musical trio of cello, piano and percussion. Dracyn Blount will celebrate the music and poetry of the Harlem Renaissance era in New York City for this performnce. “Of Ebony Embers” will examine the lives of three outstanding but very different African American poets, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay, as seen through the eyes of the great painter and muralist Aaron Douglas and a musical score will include works by Golden Era jazz artists arranged by Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker. Sydney’s Martini & Wine Bar wants to spice up your Valentine’s Day night with a very sultry and special performance from the one and only Trish Andrews!
