Join The Urban League of Central Carolinas along with Hip Hop Caucus-Charlotte as they host, “Respect My Vote!: Charlotte Town Hall & Voter Registration.” Moderated by R&B singer Sunshine Anderson and Dr. Patrick Graham, this informal discussion will talk about voting rights for the formerly incarcerated, voter ID updates and participation in a candid discussion about the importance of local and state judicial candidates in the upcoming 2016 general and Presidential elections. Come out to The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art this evening for another installment of their Modernism + Film Series. Tonight’s feature is the documentary, “Kochuu.” This film is based on Modern Japanese architecture, the influence of Japanese traditions, and the impact the combination of the two had on the Nordic building traditions. Begin your weekend at The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture with another slammin’ and soulful edition of “Gantt After Dark!” Mellow out with a mature and sophisticated crowd, with local vendors and enjoy the smooth sounds from local band, 5th & York.  Admission is FREE for the event, but if you choose to participate in the “Paint N’ Sip” session, the fee is $20 for Gantt members and $25 for non-members. The event starts at 6 p.m. The Gantt Center is located at 551 S. Tryon St. in Uptown.

Back again at Kanvas Gallery and Lounge, join DJ Tober and DJ Sincier for the second volume of “The Summer Chill-Out Series!” From Thursday to Saturday, these two gentlemen will soothe you with some classic House, Downtempo, Indie, Electronic, Acid Jazz and more! FRIDAY, August 19

Gather your friends and come out to The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art for another fun edition of “Bechtler By Night!” Hailed as a leisure haven for art enthusiasts in the Charlotte region, this event for this evening will be themed as “Bechtler Game Night.” Add some fun competition with activities ranging from a scavenger hunt, Bingo, trivia and more. Hors d’oeuvres and margarita cocktails will be available. FREE. The games begin at 5 p.m. The Bechtler is located at 420 S. Tryon St. in Uptown.

The Guerilla Poets bring some tropical flavor to Mean Mug Coffee Company this evening as they host their Tahiti All Day Luau Party! Come out and enjoy some live music, fire dancers, visual artists, open mic performances, games, prizes, delicious food and of course—some of that Limbo dancing! The admission is FREE but donations are always accepted and they will be given to the Time Out Youth Center. The party starts at 5 p.m. Mean Mug Coffee Company is located at 1024 S. Be free and vivid at Charlotte Art League this evening for a flavorful art session entitled, “Brush N’ Beats!”  Brushes and paint will be provided free of charge. Canvases in various sizes can be purchased on location; if you bring your own, you are encouraged to consider a small donation toward the Art League. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Charlotte Art League is located at 1517 Camden Rd. in Historic South End.

The Jazz Arts Initiative is back for another critically-acclaimed edition of “The Jazz Room” this evening. For your listening pleasure, gear your ears to the stage as renowned hornblower Jon Thornton pays audible homage to the legendary Chet Baker. Have some fun at Advent Coworking this evening and come out for Trivia Night! Engage with others over libations, groovy music and of course, random trivia! Get ready to set the dance floor on fire and set your spirits free because the one and only DJ Naeem Johnson is returning to the QC to House your body into the next galaxy! Back once again to soothe your soul on a Friday evening, the good people of Jazz N’ Soul music proudly presents Willie Walker & Conversation Piece. They are one of my favorite live acts in this city and while and after they perform, they will definitely leave you with something to talk about! Let loose at Petra’s this evening and take a musical journey into yesteryear with “Mirror Moves: The Free Alternative Dance Party!” DJ’s Cody Hare and Jason Herring will be dropping the best of 80s & 90s Pop, New Wave, Techno, House, Synth Pop, EDM and more! Things get real African this Friday night at Apostrophe Lounge! Everyone come out for “Afro Pop! Charlotte Vol.3–Soca, Fashion & Networking!” Join Team Bantu Fete as they celebrate all things African from music, fashion and energy! All sounds will be provided by the Dynamic DJ Kato.   Vendors will be in the joint so please support your entrepreneurial Brothers & Sisters. Also, there will be a special live drumming performance from Cheick Csoko from the Soko Drum Circle Meeting Group. Come out to Advent Coworking for an informative seminar “Taking Control of Your Credit.” Hosted by Belinda B. Bennett, this session will steer you in the right direction. Calling all builders, tinkerers, and techies! Come out to The Schiele Museum of Natural History this morning for the Mini-Maker Fest! Discover the Maker Movement and watch 3D printers in action, design squishy and paper circuits, build a fort with giant blocks and more! These activities have been proven to increase a child’s creativity as well as curiousity—come and let their minds roam free! Keep the fun going every Saturday for the rest of the Summer by celebrating the world’s bestselling puzzle toy with “Solve It Saturdays” at Discovery Place! Featuring Rubik’s Cube-inspired activities and fun for the whole family, you will get to experiment with brainteasers, puzzles, friendly cubing competitions, extreme cubing demonstrations and more. Celebrate the One Year Anniversary of the LEGO Store at SouthPark. Join in a special LEGO event with hundreds of other LEGO fans. Local avant-garde and organic music group Blu House and Friends will be giving a live performance at Repo Records. Blu House is an eclectic group of individuals out of Charlotte endeavoring to express themselves musically the best way they know how. One of Charlotte’s busiest and baddest hornblowers, Buff Dillard has two performances at BluNotes for the inauguration of their newest series, “Grooves, Booze & Jazz!” If you’ve never heard Buff blow before, you need to do your ears a favor and go listen! Is poetry and Hip-Hop one in the same? Have emcees forgotten their roots? Is poetry a lost art to today’s musicians? Internationally recognized spoken word artist and author Green Sheba hosts the fierce battle of lucid and liquid lyricism in “Poetry vs. Hip-Hop: Choose A Side.” If you think you have what it takes to compete in the warring of wordplay, this is the competition for you! SUNDAY, August 21

This Sunday afternoon, put some creativity and poise in your mind and head down to C3 Lab where the beautiful creative and activist Bree Stallings hosts her “Brush Calligraphy Workshop.” Learn how to paint watercolor floral designs with a number of brush techniques and learn how to design your own distinctive font. Also, bring in one of your favorite inspirational quotes to create from calligraphy and take it home in a framed holder. There will be some wine and refreshments available to help you loosen up while you paint.
