Family, we made it through another week! Charlotte is definitely alive in all sorts of vibes and flavors and there is a ton of stuff going on this weekend. Truth be told, I don’t even know where to start! Festivals, concerts, film screenings, food, comedy and more all with a dash of cultural sophistication. Yours truly will be making many rounds in the QC this weekend, but if you want to know where all the hot stuff is happening, be sure to check out my “Hot List” just down yonder.

Brothers and sisters all across the landscape, bring your immediate tribe, extended family and friends to The House of Africa for the 20th Annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas! Enjoy four full days of live music, drum circles, dance performances, free health screenings, exotic cuisines, fashion shows, local vendors, arts & crafts, kids’ activities, Gospel performances, lectures and lots, lots more! Admission is FREE to attend and the festivities kick off at 12 noon. The festival will be held on Thomas St. and Commonwealth Ave. in the Plaza-Midwood District.

The Jazz Arts Initiative (JAI) invites you out to the Stage Door Theatre this weekend for a special set of perfomances! Get ready to take a journey back to the roots of Jazz as JAI proudly presents “The Jazz Room: Mark Braud Plays Traditional New Orleans!” The vibes of the Crescent City comes to the Queen City with a delectable gumbo medley borrowing from various cultural influences and traditions. Trumpeter and vocalist Mark Braud, takes you on a musical ride through a city which birthed one of the world’s most original art forms—jazz. It’s time to celebrate our heritage through sound and rhythm at The Gantt Center this evening—everyone come out for Gantt After Dark: Black Music Month Edition! Relax with the cool down vibes of jazz collectives, 5th & York, The Harvey Cummings Project and the Buff Dillard Music Group. Then, get ready to boogie upstairs with DJ-CK and DJ Fannie Mae. Also, join local creative and teacher Cathay Dawkins as he hosts a special “Paint N’ Sip” course! The hilarious local theatre troupe Charlotte Squawks is back with thirteenth installment, their latest project, “Charlotte, We Have A Problem.” Who is Charlotte Squawks you ask? Simply put, it’s the satire of Saturday Night Live mixed with Broadway, welded with the socioeconomic climate of the Queen City. The creative duo of Mike Collins and Brian Kahn collaborates with the area’s most talented performers to parody current events, pop culture, sports, life, politics on a local and national medium. Attention all you comic book junkies and superhero fanatics! Put on your capes, masks, gadget belts and fly down to the Charlotte Convention Center for “HeroesCon 2017!” Boasting an incredible guest list built mainly on reputation and goodwill, HeroesCon is known nationwide as a “must” on the summer schedule, drawing fans, exhibitors, and creators from all over the world to the Charlotte Convention Center. There will be over 40 illustrators, artists, writers and more for you to meet & greet or quite possibly have a classic good vs. evil duel! This weekend, at Studio Movie Grill, you’re invited to check out the riveting and multi-award winning documentary “Raising Bertie.” Directed by Margaret Byrne and executive produced by rapper J. Cole, “Raising Bertie” is a an intimate six-year portrait of three African-American boys growing into adulthood in rural North Carolina, exploring complex relationships between generational poverty, educational inequity, and race. The Latin American Coalition is thrilled to bring the second annual Ritmo & Sabor festival to Plaza Midwood, one of Charlotte’s most diverse neighborhoods! Featuring live music by Orquesta K’ Che and UltimaNota, dance performance and FREE salsa lessons by Rumbao Latin Dance Company and delicious, authentic Latin cuisine, this festival will be fantastic celebration of the Caribbean for the entire family to enjoy! Everyone loves a hero — or do they? Find out whether it’s more fun to save the day or take over the world at “Science on the Rocks: Heroes & Villains!” Come dressed as your favorite alter ego to see who wins the Battle of Good vs. Evil during this month’s adults-only night at The Discovery Place. Take a ride Silver Surfer-style on a hoverboard, find out how a Kryptonite Vaportini affects your super powers, put your super skills to the test on our climbing wall and inflatable obstacle course, snap a selfie with life-sized replicas of Iron Man and Captain America and lots more! Gather your friends and come out to The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art for another fun edition of “Bechtler By Night!” Hailed as a leisure haven for art enthusiasts in the Charlotte region, this event for this evening will be themed as “Painting with Bob Ross.” Hors d’oeuvres and margarita cocktails will be available. Bring your friends out for food, wine, and some brilliant spoken word by acclaimed poet and my good friend Jst Jah and Jerome Pearson. Your painters for the evening are Kamaria Okolo, Matthew Barnes and Raed Al-Rawi and music selections will be provided by Grade A Grooves. This is a great opportunity for Latinas who are leaders in business, government, academia, philanthropy, the arts and their homes to gather together to share experiences, exchange ideas and learn about important topics such as finance, health, fashion, beauty, etc. It is also a great opportunity for non-Latinos to get to know more about the culture of the Latino-American woman and connect with them. The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg invites you out to Trinity Episcopal School for a mandatory community meeting entitled, “Conversations vs. Confrontations.” In this volatile period of time when police and Black male civilian encounters are often skewed into a disastrous tangent, this meeting will show how to ensure positive interactions between law enforcement and young Black males in Charlotte. New Growth Hair Magazine is hosting Charlotte’s first screening of “Bino and Fino!” Parents bring your children to watch an African educational cartoon series from Nigeria about a brother and sister (Bino and Fino) who live in a modern day city in Africa. In each episode Bino and Fino, with the help of their friend Zeena the Magic Butterfly and their family, discover and learn things about Africa and the world. The series will show aspects of the African Culture, history, geography and much more. The show was created for parents who faced difficulty finding positive, fun, educational content about Africa for their children to watch. This afternoon, feed your literary spirits at My Camilles Café and come out for the exclusive premiere of the new inspirational children’s book, “My Mommy Told Me I Could Do Anything!Penned by the gorgeous duo of Camillya Masunda and LaNayah Miller, it’s a story of a young African-American girl who has giant aspirations to do great things in the world. With her mother’s guiding word and love, she creates a vision of goals to conquer in life. There will be a books for sale and the two authors will be on hand to sign them. Charlotte, get ready for more great live entertainment as local radio station V101.9 hosts the third annual “Queen City Jazz Fest!” Hitting the stage this evening are contemporary jazz and R&B staples who are no strangers to your ears or to this city—Brian Culbertson, Mike Phillips feat. Jeff Bradshaw, Jeff Lorber and the sultry Yuna. For two decades, the family at No Grease Barbershop has been giving customer and community service that has been a cut above the rest. This evening, get dapper and dashing and head down to the Levine Museum of the New South for the No Grease! 20 Year Anniversary “Strange Fruit” Banquet! This fun-filled fundraiser recognizes students, community leaders and more.
