Family, we made it through another week! Charlotte is definitely alive in all sorts of vibes and flavors and there is a ton of stuff going on this weekend. Truth be told, I don’t even know where to start! Festivals, concerts, film screenings, food, comedy and more all with a dash of cultural sophistication. Yours truly will be making many rounds in the QC this weekend, but if you want to know where all the hot stuff is happening, be sure to check out my “Hot List” just down yonder.

The Jazz Arts Initiative (JAI) invites you out to the Stage Door Theatre this weekend for a special set of perfomances! Get ready to take a journey back to the roots of Jazz as JAI proudly presents “The Jazz Room: Mark Braud Plays Traditional New Orleans!” The vibes of the Crescent City comes to the Queen City with a delectable gumbo medley borrowing from various cultural influences and traditions. Trumpeter and vocalist Mark Braud, takes you on a musical ride through a city which birthed one of the world’s most original art forms—jazz. The hilarious local theatre troupe Charlotte Squawks is back with thirteenth installment, their latest project, “Charlotte, We Have A Problem.” Who is Charlotte Squawks you ask? Simply put, it’s the satire of Saturday Night Live mixed with Broadway, welded with the socioeconomic climate of the Queen City. The creative duo of Mike Collins and Brian Kahn collaborates with the area’s most talented performers to parody current events, pop culture, sports, life, politics on a local and national medium. Attention all you comic book junkies and superhero fanatics! Put on your capes, masks, gadget belts and fly down to the Charlotte Convention Center for “HeroesCon 2017!” Boasting an incredible guest list built mainly on reputation and goodwill, HeroesCon is known nationwide as a “must” on the summer schedule, drawing fans, exhibitors, and creators from all over the world to the Charlotte Convention Center. There will be over 40 illustrators, artists, writers and more for you to meet & greet or quite possibly have a classic good vs. evil duel! This weekend, at Studio Movie Grill, you’re invited to check out the riveting and multi-award winning documentary “Raising Bertie.” Directed by Margaret Byrne and executive produced by rapper J. Cole, “Raising Bertie” is a an intimate six-year portrait of three African-American boys growing into adulthood in rural North Carolina, exploring complex relationships between generational poverty, educational inequity, and race. The Latin American Coalition is thrilled to bring the second annual Ritmo & Sabor festival to Plaza Midwood, one of Charlotte’s most diverse neighborhoods! In each episode Bino and Fino, with the help of their friend Zeena the Magic Butterfly and their family, discover and learn things about Africa and the world. The series will show aspects of the African Culture, history, geography and much more.
