Peace and blessings everyone! Here we are, another week in the bag and another weekend on our horizon. There’s lots of stuff to do in “The Rundown” and as always, I’m gonna deliver the goods Black Ferris Bueller-style! Start your weekend off with the gift of words as SouthEnd ARTS invites you out to Speak Justice this evening! Gather ‘round the campfire as storyteller, activist, poet and wonder woman Hannah Hasan speaks truth to power and purpose in lifting the voices and experiences of women. She will share some of her cherished poems and the stories behind them that have empowered her to become a woman who is not afraid to speak justice to the world. Admission is FREE. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. SouthEnd ARTS is located at 1507 Camden Rd. in Historic South End.

 

 

Dapper Street Productions, Inc. returns for the month of August with another installment of its heralded performance series Color of Jazz – Toni Tupponce & Matt Kelly sing Kurt Elling! Two of the QC’s finest vocalists, the lovely Toni Tupponce and Mr. Matt Kelly have teamed up to pay homage to Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling! Kurt’s style is smooth as cognac and the two performers chosen for this special show are sure to serve you a glass of audible excellence. Admission is FREE to attend and all ages are welcome. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the Mallard Creek Rec Center. 2530 Johnston Oheler Rd. in the University Area.

Ladies, the movement continues as TeamBlkGrlFly Week 2019 proudly presents the Live In Color Workshop! Through this workshop you will use your courage to tell the world your story. Whether they be of triumphs, failures, love found, love lost and childhood experiences, these episodes have and continue to shape how we think, feel, live and love. Your curators and hosts for today, Bea N’ Bev will help you find your “inner G” (energy) and utilize a variety of writing and interactive activities to open your truth Chakra (known as your throat Chakra) to deal and heal from trauma and use your newfound freedom to examine how your life experiences have shaped who you are and how speaking your truth can help you move forward living life in color. Dapper Street Productions, Inc. is back for some more jazz action with a special low-registering musical tribute entitled Upright – A Tribute To Bass Players! Under the leadership of John Shaughnessy, this three month series will highlight bassists such as Ron Carter, Paul Chambers and Charles Mingus. Admission is FREE to attend. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m. at The Hut. 413 Johnston Dr. in Pineville.

 

Ladies, it’s time to let loose and have fun with your crew as TeamBlkGirlFly Week 2019 invites you out to Pajamas + Pillow Talk this evening! Tonight’s episode will feature a panel of personalities who dishes out all the tea from relationships, health, wellness and all things Black Girl Magic! Whether your pajamas are silk with lace trim or your boyfriend’s tank and boxers, bring that thing and swing it in a circle! There will also be live music, crafted cocktails and “Get Your Groove On” swag bags and much more! OutenLove Events and Mr. 305 Entertainment have teamed back up for their weekend party jam, I Want My 90s Back! Step in the zone and go back into the time when music, fashion and culture was “all that and a bag of chips” as The Blend King, DJ Shaun Nyce gives you the best of classic 90s Hip Hop, R&B, Neo-Soul, House and a special tribute to Erykah Badu and Goodie Mob! If you want to experience some different sonic flavor this Friday night, come out to Snug Harbor for Blow Your Head — October Edition! My good brothers of Blow Your Head, Flock of Slagles and Jah Freedom have teamed up with special guest, my man DJ L.O. who’ll all be spinning an entire vinyl set of Funk, Soul, Boogie, Garage, House and Rare Grooves for your listening pleasures! Also, there will be a live performance from local creative Dexter Jordan! Admission is $5 per person and be ready to dance! Everyone rise up, come out to Triple C Brewing Co. and join Butterfly Visions Project as they host #HashtagLunchbagCLT. October is Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness Month to give back to the community in a huge way as you prepare lunch bags for our less fortunate neighbors and survivors and give them a heartwarming, soul-stirring hug of love. A $10 donation for supplies isn’t required, however it is suggested. The event will begin at 8 a.m. Triple C Brewing Co. is located at 2900 Griffith St. in Historic South End.

It’s all food, fun and flyness this Saturday as Dupp & Swat invites you out to TeamBlkGirlFly Week 2019 Fly Markets! In conjunction with Boss Friends Ent. and Vegan Love Culture, come on down and enjoy some shopping from local Black-owned businesses, live entertainment, food, yoga classes and a book talk/signing with author Daphne Fuller. University City comes alive for kids and kids-at-heart at the 3rd Annual Charlotte Kids Festival this afternoon! Fueled by imagination, creativity, and giggles, the Charlotte Kids Fest will inspire and motivate young minds with professional artistic, creative, playful, and educational experiences. Enjoy the outdoors of UNC Charlotte’s campus with hands-on activities, performers, food trucks, and more! The mission of the Charlotte Kid’s Fest is to expand educational & entertainment options for the children and their families in the Charlotte area. But today, that’s about to change as Davita “Miss Swatty” Galloway and Bea N’ Bev host the ASATA: A Seat At the Table Awards Ceremony! This celebration will honor the contributions and creativity of Black women in the Charlotte area in some unconventional but inspiring award categories! #ASATA is providing the opportunity for Black women to finally be recognized and to have their say!
