There’s a lot of things, tricks and treats in store for the minions this weekend so be sure to have those costumes ready for loads of endless fun! Experience a weekend of rhythm as Shae Movement African Arts, Yaye Fall Cultural Arts & Kuumba West African Dancers invites you out to the 3rd Annual Nanioubolo African Dance & Drum Conference! This interactive conference will feature a variety of West African dance and drumming instructed by master choreographers and percussionists. Instructors include the esteemed Barakissa Coulibaly from the Ivory Coast and Babacar Mbaye from Senegal among other several local notable dancers and musicians. Explore some vibrant art this evening and head over to The Artisan’s Palate for a special showcase feature entitled “Scandalous!” Step into a world where color schemes and patterns take amorphous shapes in this intimate display provided by local artist, Jonay di Ragno. Put some jazz in your life and head down to The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art for November installment of Jazz at the Bechtler. For tonight’s episode entitled, “Sinatra Returns”, world-renowned trumpeter Joe Grandsen will pay an homage to one of the greatest voices in music. Distinguished first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Gransden has been able to alternate lyricism with an aggressive, angular approach. Don’t miss this show! This weekend, Three Bone Theatre invites you out for the world premiere of the gritty, raw play Protective Custody PRISONER 34042. Written by Charles LaBorde and based on the memoir of well-known Charlotte Holocaust survivor Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz, this intimate piece brings the audience on Susan’s personal experiences as a young woman in Europe during the rise of Nazism and her riveting survival of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps. A universal story of survival and the strength of the human spirit in the most extreme circumstances, is told beautifully by a two-person cast as they bring Susan’s story to life and reflect on the current rise of antisemitism. The Gantt Center invites you and your entire tribe out for a special celebration of its newest exhibition, “and justice for all” and “Painting Is Its Own Country.” In addition to guided tours and hands-on workshops, exhibiting artist Sherrill Roland will discuss being imprisoned under false charges and his subsequent visual and performance art process. Curator Dexter Wimberly, who assembled works by 26 emerging and established artists painting today, will share his perspective of the art form’s ability to offer space for freedom, diversity and self-expression.
