Greetings everyone! This is some topsy-turvy weather we are having, but everything is still pretty cool, dig? However, I found a lot of goodies that will warm up your soul just like a bowl of fresh soup that mama used to make! There’s a few stage plays, science digs, lectures, socials and of course you know there’s no weekend possible without a little dancing, right? Also, yours truly will be co-hosting the NC Shero Award Ceremony & Roundtable on Saturday afternoon! In celebration of Levine Museum’s 25th anniversary, they are pleased to present 2017‘s “Taste of the New South: A Gourmet Musical Celebration.” The event will feature an inspired tasting menu and creative cocktails served throughout the museum.  Entertainment includes a variety of music from our region— jazz, gospel, Carolina beach music, funk, and even some modern twists. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art will screen “The Edge of the Possible” during the museum’s Modernism + Film series. This film discusses the rises and struggles of architect, Jørn Utzon, and the dramatic course of the construction of the Sydney Opera House. Considered to be the greatest building that Australia has ever seen as well as one of the finest achievements from modern architecture, the Sydney Opera House, is re-born again in this beautifully captured documentary that includes a rare never before seen interview with the Danish architect and four of his close-knit colleagues. The lovely writer, director and producer Peachanda Dubose invites you to experience her new work, “FERGUSON – The Musical.” Inspired by the murder of Mike Brown and civil unrests in Ferguson, Missouri, this is a mostly male cast of veterans actors, singers, spoken word artists and rappers. Actress Trisha Mann Grant portrays a news reporter following the story closely. McColl Center for Art + Innovation alumnus artist Shaun Leonardo’s public-participatory workshop and performance “I Can’t Breathe” takes the form of a self-defense class. You will learn a range of self-defense techniques, from purely pacifist, self-protective maneuvers—including how one may relieve the pressure of a chokehold—to more overt, defensive strategies. Participants are then paired off and, following cues given by Leonardo, each pair enacts the self-defense techniques just learned, alternating in the role of the aggressor. As the artist recites a script inspired by Nina Simone, each pair elects which action to take solely based on how he or she internalizes the words’ meaning. Based from the smash-hit film, this spectacle of sound brings the thrilling tradition of HBCU marching bands to the theatrical stage. On Q Productions brings their 10th anniversary season to a close as they conclude with one of their most acclaimed pieces, “Miles & Coltrane: Blue (.).” In the fortuitous 1950s, the American social constituency was rapidly changing and jazz was its primary soundtrack. For two of the art’s biggest contributors, John Coltrane and Miles Davis, it was their time to combine forces to not only make music, but make a different kind of noise—revolution.
