There’s a few things cooking in the QC this weekend and of course, your man, The Black Ferris Bueller has got the delicious cultural fixin’s for your soul! Get ready work, move, groove, get on the good foot at jam with THE JAM: CLT this evening! For your kinetic session tonight, join the beautiful, energetic and vibrant Alicia Williams as she guides you along a special and fun Hip Hop dance class entitled “The Beat Box!” Work up a sweat with some fun, basic aerobic moves set to some uptempo and funky Hip Hop tunes of many eras—don’t worry, Alicia wants you to feel good! I’ve got just one question for you—who the heck is Ryan Davis? He’s a homegrown and nationally-recognized funnyman and he’s coming to perform for you this evening at The Comedy Zone! By winning many comedy competitions, starting a successful monthly comedy showcase, and gaining the respect of comedians that have been doing it 20+ years, Ryan proved that the amount of stand-up comedy success that he saw in such a short period of time was not a fluke. Due to his success as a viral internet star, Ryan no longer is an opening act. Though he is known more for his online videos, Ryan isn’t like the other internet comedians–he is a dual threat that is the first of his kind and absolutely hilarious! Kick off your holiday weekend with some sonic flavor as the good people of Radio Rehab Carolinas proudly presents the One-Year Anniversary of Sounds & Sixteens! Last year, we set out to give a platform to local musicians wanting to get some exposure and we have succeeded far beyond our wildest dreams. However, we have much more ground to cover. Tonight, we celebrate with headlining MC Joshua Gunn giving a taste of his Durham roots on the mic. Mix and mingle with the community as your favorite Chocolate culinary chariots corral around the only Black-owned brewery in the city for an evening of fun and celebrating the success of our community! Join Create Amazing, LLC as they host the Black Friday Comedy edition of Paint & Play at Apostrophe Lounge this evening! This festive fusion of the arts will showcase a huge lineup of the region’s most talented spoken word artists, painters, comedians and more entertainment! Acts include Don Garrett, Naomi, William, Gundry The Comedian and many more! There will be desserts provided by Insomnia Cookies and Cup Your Cakes. Also, ease the tension in your physical being with free massages from Wade the Massage Guy. The event will be hosted by comedienne and 104.4 radio personality Coco Lenell. This evening, take an inside look at the grips of gentrification through a comedic cinematic lens as Mosaic Live proudly presents a special screening of “The North Pole!” The North Pole is a political comedy web series about three best friends born and raised in North Oakland, CA, who struggle to stay rooted as their neighborhood becomes a hostile environment. It explores these issues in a humorous and entertaining way to help explain some of the complexities that exist in the areas of gentrification and climate change. These shorts will have you laughing, thinking and coming up with a MASTER plan on how to be a part of the solution and get off the sideline and into the game. This evening, come out to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in conjunction with The Asbury for a very special community culinary conversation and dinner with Mr. Michael Twitty! A writer, culinary historian, and historical interpreter, Twitty traced his ancestors back to their arrival in the 1700s as enslaved Africans. In NC, he traces his lineage back to 1674. His new book, the aptly-titled “The Cooking Gene”, chronicles that story. In the process of claiming his kin, he also claims his food. His writing confronts the issues of race, class, and Southern culture in his ongoing journey throughout life.
