Greetings everyone! It’s Groundhog Day—well, we all know that there’s six more weeks of winter left anyway but if you’re in denial, I suggest you go seek some therapy. Anyways, there’s a lot to do this weekend in addition to being Super Bowl weekend. So everyone get out there, enjoy yourselves and all that good stuff! Latin American Contemporary Art (LaCa) Projects is pleased to present “Strike a Match to Hear My Sound”, Cristina Toro’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. This new body of work addresses natural and supernatural phenomena related to fire and light. The inspiration for these works began in Toro’s kitchen, where she experienced the phenomenon of luminous plasma causing ionization of air particles and creating a glowing light, or St. Elmo’s Fire. This work is not only influenced by Toro’s own research into rituals surrounding warmth, light and nourishment, but also by the history of related images. Admission is FREE to attend. Get ready to lose yourself in laughter at BluNotes this evening as they present to you, “Laff It Up Thursdays!” This first Thursday of every month comedy jam is full of nonstop humor with a list of comedians and comediennes ready to clear your heart’s cholesterol with laughter. Join local grassroots initiative Educate to Engage this evening at The Third Place: Coffee, Community & Common Ground this evening for a discussion of the newly-released book “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” by Michelle Alexander. Hey adults, want to indulge in some experimental after work fun? Take a short drive over to Gastonia and head to the Schiele Museum of Natural History for another rousing edition of Schiele After Hours! Tonight’s exhibition, “Those Aren’t Aliens”, explores the similarities between sci-fi depictions of aliens and fossil evidence of actual ancient Earth-dwelling species. One of the museum curators, explains the purposes of the oddities of an ancient arthropod, trilobites, will host a guided tour of the museum’s special exhibit, “Trilobite Treasures”, scientist talks, film screenings, trivia and games, free beer and more! The 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte are seeking additional Charlotte area high school students (male and female) for participation in their Pathways to Success program. They are geared and striving for reinforcing workforce readiness and entrepreneurial excellence. This is an 18-week course running from Sunday (2/5) all the way through May. Queens University invites everyone out to their main campus to behold and experience the cool musical stylings of Brooklyn Conservatory of Music pianist, Karl Larson. Tonight’s performance entitled, “Grand Tour: Music Inspired by Venice, the Sea and Travel,” includes works from Venetian Renaissance master Claudio Merulo, Liszt’s romantic evocation of Venetian boat songs, Ravel’s coloristic expression of a ship at sea, and Salvatorre Sciarrino’s 20th century representation of a fragile maritime city. Visuals and music makes some necessary noise this evening as The Dew Group, Dupp & Swat, Shades of Personality and Hip Hop Caucus have come together to present “#SpeakOnActOn.” This will be a special presentation of artists throughout the community as they share art for the movement. 2017 will provide new challenges and the art will provide new energy for empowerment. Whether the fight is for Civil Rights, environmental rights, criminal justice reform or other human matters the goal is to inspire change resulting from action. Admission is FREE to attend and the event begins at 6 p.m. The address of the event is 2521 The Plaza Rd. in the Plaza-Midwood District.
