Greetings family! Time just keeps flying by because we are now in the month of August! And to kick off the hottest month of the year, I’ve found some true hotness boiling and brewing in the Queen City streets this weekend! From jazz, to food trucks, tributes, games and much more, you will definitely not want to remain indoors! Dapper Street Productions is set to give you a royal sound treatment this evening as they humbly welcome you to experience Jazz in the Key of Coltrane! Bandleader Lovell Bradford is ready to set the stage in motion and travel down the tunnels of jazz channeling the energy of one of music’s most prolific dignitaries, the late, great John Coltrane. Tonight, the band is hot and ready to give you a taste of some of the A-Trane’s best known works including ‘Giant Steps,’ ‘My Favorite Things’ and ‘A Love Supreme.’ Admission is FREE to attend. Raise a glass to the end of another successful artist residency season at the McColl Center by coming out to celebrate at the Summer 2018 Open House! Meet and greet artists-in-residence: Eliana Arenas, Julio Gonzalez, Monique Luck, April Marten, Antoine Williams, and Stephanie J. Woods and see the work they’ve been creating this summer and get another look at our exhibition, The Open Orchard, by exhibiting artist-in-residence Sam Van Aken. Join Charlotte Talks Radio of WFAE at The McGlohon Theater this evening as they host a special and necessary live broadcast entitled “Beyond She Says: Sexual Assault in Charlotte” this evening. For a sexual assault survivor, speaking up about abuse can be daunting. Many never come forward. However for those that do, finding a resolution can be a winding and frustrating road. WFAE’s “She Says” podcast has followed one woman’s story of sexual assault and her long path towards justice. As the podcast concludes, Charlotte Talks host Mike Collins delves further into the topic of sexual assault in Charlotte in a special WFAE Public Conversation. Tonight, you’ll find out how these cases are investigated, discuss what victims go through, and explore whether justice is being served. “She Says” host Sarah Delia, law enforcement officials, and victim’s rights advocates will participate in a panel discussion and public forum. Bring all your friends and family out for an evening of fun as you dine from some of the city’s finest and most delicious Chocolate culinary chariots, scoop up some cool fashions and trinkets from local vendors, have chances to win cool prizes and get down on the good foot to the sounds of DJ Steel Wheel! For some more four wheelin’ and feeding action, head over to Resident Culture Brewing Co. for Plaza-Midwood Food Truck Friday! Some of the city’s most diverse food trucks will be on hand serving up the goods and while you eat, network and play, Charlotte’s own, the legendary DJ That Guy Smitty will be dishing out some classic Hip Hop flavor along with remixes, B-sides, Rare Grooves and much more! Local grassroots initiative collective The Agenda has been giving your Summer some much needed flavor on Charlotte’s Historic West End Corridor. But this evening, in collaboration with Historic West End Initiative bring the entire family out for a special installment of community interface entitled Mosaic Live First Fridays: The Computer LUV Edition! It’s all technicalities and terrabytes this evening with art, music, business conversations and games from collaborator Potions & Pixels! It’s time for another first Friday edition of Jazz at the Bechtler! For tonight’s listening experience, in-house sound masters, The Ziad Jazz Quartet teams up with renowned trumpeter Curtis Taylor to the Bechtler stage for a night of unflinchingly vibrant and rousing jazz collaborations. Grammy Award winning trumpeter Curtis Taylor’s lyrical and melodic improvisational style displays a level of maturity far beyond his counterparts. His unique blend of soulfulness, harmonic sensibilities and rhythm melt together for an unforgettable sound that directly connects with the soul of the listener. If you want to craft your Friday evening with a Caribbean twist, join Liberate Your Palate CLT as they host the Caribbean Flavors Cocktail Class! In their August class the host bartender will focus on Caribbean-inspired cocktails featuring different Latin ingredients. Over the course of this fantastic evening you and your fellow craft classmates will look into the secrets of Caribbean cocktails that bring the simplest ingredients into their finest potential. Cocktails to be made in this class are Mojitos the way Cubans intended them, Rum Punch that you will be able make using a selection of ingredients of your liking and a Puerto Rican inspired Pina Colada. Educate to Engage, LLC, Free Press, Democracy NC and Charlotte Film Society invites you out to The Wells Fargo Auditorium for a special screening and discussion of the critically-acclaimed documentary, “Wilmington On Fire.” Take a rare look inside the past of Wilmington, NC—a once thriving Black Wall Street. This documentary will highlight the city’s history and how a whole community of Black constituents flourished and how their livelihood was destroyed by a vicious mob of incendiary violence and hate. Put a tropical twist in your Saturday and head over to Mangos Caribbean Restaurant for the Roots, Rum & Reggae Caribbean Staycation!
