What’s the word everybody? It’s been a rather long week for yours truly, but we have made it! It’s Mother’s Day weekend and while everyone and their Mother will be busy at brunches, I took the alternative route and found some things that she’ll truly be smiling about! The Jazz Arts Initiative is proud to present the JAI All-Star Youth Ensemble in their Spring recital entitled “Blues, Bebop, & Beyond!” The All-Stars will feature renditions from some of your favorite jazz icons such as John Coltrane, Cole Porter, and Ellis Marsalis, including the All-Stars’ original compositions from their 2018 repertoire. This evening supports the JAI Jazz Academy program and the Academy’s Summer New Orleans Experience. The JAI All-Star Youth Ensemble is composed of some of the Charlotte region’s brightest talents, including dedicated student musicians from a variety of middle and high schools.   These skilled young musicians comprising two All-Star ensembles, continue to earn accolades wherever they appear. For all my jazz enthusiasts, the fine people at Jazz Arts Initiative are back to fill your weekend with melodious music as the proudly present “The Jazz Room: Lovell Bradford plays Herbie Hancock.” Pianist Lovell Bradford, an adjunct professor at Davidson College, has played on a number of top Gospel and jazz recordings. Bradford has performed with artists such as Pharez Whitted, Slide Hampton, The Marsalis Family, Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Ronnie Burrage, and many others. He currently serves on the faculty of JAI’s Youth Ensembles & Workshops and is a frequent performer at The Jazz Room. Kids! I’ve got something cool lined up for you today! Grab your friends and parents and head down to The Discovery Place for a fun interactive workshop entitled, “Takeover Days: Charlotte Water.” As part of the Year of the Engineer Saturdays, local engineers, professional organizations and corporations will provide industry-specific experiences and showcase a variety of engineering work being done in the Carolinas. Charlotte Water and Discovery Place Science staff will take over featuring a host of have hands-on activities, crafts and water experiments throughout the museum. Drive the CCTV into a simulated sewer, try your hand at putting together a meter, put on a lab coat and prepare slides for water experiments and much more! Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will host a program to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme and title of the program, “The Legacy of Dr. MLK in Charlotte” will highlight the history of King’s appearances in the Queen City, the immediate effect of his sudden and shocking death in this city and the steps that Charlotteans took to rebuild consensus in the aftermath of his murder. A panel of eyewitnesses and scholars will talk about the city’s reaction to this event. Panelists include North Carolina State Representative Kelly Alexander, Mecklenburg County Commissioner Vilma Leake and historian Dr. Willie Griffin of The Citadel. They will offer their recollections and reflections about Charlotte in 1968 with hopes of shining a light on the present as well as the past. Charlotte, it’s time for one our city’s most beloved art festivals – take the light rail, ride your bike or carpool out to the 16th Annual Art & Soul of South End! Over the years, the neighborhood has changed, and the city has too, but the core concept of the festival is the same — celebrate the artists and businesses who make this place home. This family-friendly festival will take over Camden Road celebrating crafts, creativity and community throughout South End. There will be demonstrations and opportunities to meet over 60 artists, makers and chefs, crafts and activities from neighborhood businesses, music and dance. Admission is FREE. For some true theatrical treasure this Saturday, bring the family out to the Methodist Home Rec Center as Brand New Sheriff Productions along with The Arts & Science Council Culture Blocks are proud to present excerpts from the upcoming stage production, “Purlie Victorious!” Purlie is set in an era when Jim Crow laws still were in effect in the American South. Its focus is on the dynamic, traveling preacher Purlie Victorious Judson, who returns to his small Georgia town hoping to save Big Bethel, the community’s church, and emancipate the cotton pickers who work on oppressive Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee’s plantation. With the assistance of Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, Purlie hopes to pry loose from Cotchipee an inheritance due his long-lost cousin and use the money to achieve his goals. Also playing a part in Purlie’s plans is Cotchipee’s son Charlie, who ultimately proves to be far more fair-minded than his Simon Legree-like father and who saves the church from destruction with an act of defiance that has dire consequences for the tyrannical Cap’n. The powers of Black and Brown combine this afternoon as the Tryon Community hosts the Afro-Latino Festival 2018!   This festival celebrates and unifies the cultural cornerstones of African and Latino heritage through live music, food, artisans, vendors and more. A portion of Uptown Charlotte will be transformed into a marketplace of African/Latino favorites paired with jamming music for a sizzling family fiesta. There will be some goodies featured for everyone and attendees can journey through various represented countries and experience their people, music, art, food, and culture. Everyone rise, shine and get that blood pumping with Issa Vibe Adventures as they host the Mother’s Day Hike – Back to South Mountain! Spend Mother’s Day out in Mother Nature walking a moderate trail of the nearly 3000-foot tall South Mountain landscaped with 80-ft waterfalls and multiple streams along the way. This trip is for the entire family so be sure to bring snacks and water. Also, you will have a small lunch break at a country store on the trail. Everyone will meet at Target (9841 Northlake Centre Pkwy) at 8:15 a.m. and will depart for the trail by 8:30 a.m.

This afternoon, get your film fix in with Mr. Felix Curtis of Classic Black Cinema Series at The Gantt Center as he hosts a special screening of “Ava and Gabriel: A Love Story.” Directed by Felix DeRooy and set in Curacao in the 1940s, this film tells of the painter Gabriel Goedbloed, who arrives from Holland to paint a mural of the Virgin Mary in a local church. Gabriel is black, originally from Surinam. The colonial Antillean society proves less than tolerant towards him, especially after he chooses as his model a young Black teacher, Ava. This afternoon, slide out to Tip Top Daily Market for a special sonic brunch entitled Scrambled Eggs! Come and relax as DJs Luke Stemmerman and Flock of Slagles sets the mood with a selection of avant-garde Dub, Reggae, Fusion, Soul and Jazz tunes from their own personal vinyl collections. The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra invites you out to the Halton Theater at CPCC Main Campus as they proudly present their exciting season finale this afternoon. Today’s feature is the William Tell Overture, as conducted by Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, and will also offer a special performance by Grammy Award-winning Charlotte Symphony Artist-in-Residence Mark O’Connor and his wife Maggie.
